Don’t buy Microsoft Office from Microsoft online!

Lately, I started an order of Ms Office 2010 Academic Professional. Everything went fine up to the paying options which were Credit Card (Don’t have one), transaction (Didn’t want to wait) and Click and Buy which is a one-click-pay service.

Since I didn’t want to wait 3 days until my money arrived on their bank account I closed the order (by closing the browser) and registered on Click and Buy first. Sadly it needed me to verify my bank account by sending 1 Cent to it with a special unlock-code I have to enter later. So I had to wait anyway (1 day actually). Well what can I say: After I tried ordering Office 2010 again it told me “You already have ordered too much copies of this product” while I just started an order, clicked on pay (where I couldn’t pay) and closed the browser. I asked the reseller which is selling Office 2010 for Microsoft and they told me they can’t do anything about it but waiting for Microsoft to create an alternative account for me.

Well, I thought: Let’s just create a new account by my own. Microsoft verifies that you are allowed to receive Academic Professional by a valid University E-Mail and I had actually two addresses. The second address worked but ordering failed once more (WHAT THE FUCK?). Now I’m pissed and going to get Ms Office 2010 somewhere else and that fast since I actually needed it days ago for a seminar I have next Monday.

Some may say “get Open Office” but I need MS Office 2010 for two reasons:

  • At my work, everyone uses MS Office and it’s fucking annoying if you can’t read their documents and vise versa. Especially annoying if you have to do orders.
  • Once I saved my slides in Open Office and after opening the file the next day every single Image in the presentation was corrupt and I had to do (the slides) from scratch – Took me one more day of work doing it.

So what have we learned? Don’t click on “buy” in an Microsoft online order when you haven’t set up you accounts yet, or you have to wait a Week until MS “fixes the issues”.

Edit:

It worked now! Wow! But only with my alternative login and only on Internet Explorer (OMFG). And I had to make my sister the buyer (she is studying too so it’s fine) instead of myself. So actually she bought it for me with my money. If Microsoft is ever answering my request allowing me to buy it myself and if my sister ever wants to by Office 2010, I’ll buy it for her.

    Microsoft Suck.

    Well, your first argument against openoffice doesn’t really count, unless you need to make a lot of doc’s in the 2007 format (docx,xlsx,pptx). OO is perfectly able to read from *x files.

    I haven’t experienced the bug with the images (yet) so I do not even dare commend on it. It sounds very annoying.

    I use OO not all that often ( I just don’t like the style) but I do have it installed on all my pc, just in case I need to open a file and do not have internet.

    Because for most, if not all, my work I do in google doc’s. If you have internet access in class, just start writing in google doc’s and download it to your pc at a later time and make it pretty and stuff when you do have office 2010.

    This is just how I do it and works fine until now.

    btw @adam: I agree, Grin

    Indeed, Microsuck sucks, and also, use Google Docs. A lot more portable, knows almost all formats, and has almost all the tools in MS Office.

    @Gamerlv
    They use docx all the time and doc-formats do not look like they have to look. And since I’m working for my University the documents (orders) have to look always the same (offical look/logo and all the crap).

    And to the image bug: I experienced it once and only once. I’ve been using oOo now for years and it was fine. Anyway, I need to get MS Office (Will still use both but mainly MS).

    And google docs is nothing for doing heavy presentations like I do (high quality images and graphs. Sometimes a demonstration video of an experiment etc).

    Solution:
    Simply don’t buy Microsoft products, they are actually great but the licensing is shit.

    @The Eagle
    Agreed. Microsoft should give discounts to the Beta Testers, I’m keeping my Beta installed.

    Also, thanks for that post about Need for Speed World, it looks epic.

    @The Eagle
    I’m getting two licenses of MS Office 2010 for 69€. That’s cheap for that piece of good software.
    I’m paying hundreds of Euro/Dollar for Hardware or Several games, why not to pay some of those on a cheap student version?

    Ow, I didn’t realize you needed it for power point, I completely agree that for high quality presentation google docs is not handy. I was think/talking about the docs part Grin . For presentations power point (2010) is indeed the only real competitor.

    I finished my presentation just today. It was so much easier to do than with Open Office and it had much more cool effects like dropshadows, reflection and all the crap.
    I especially liked the ribbons and that you get a popup for every object you mark with most used actions next to your cursor.
